There is an anonymous saying where in Malaysia Rm1,000 can buy you 1 hp.
However, sometimes performance is not always about the horsepower and performance cars usually don’t come cheap. Here are some used cars that are fun to drive and won't hurt the bank too much.
Volkswagen Golf GTI (Mk.7)

The world’s most famous hot hatch. The gist of this car is to provide good handling and performance without sacrificing day to day practicality and usability. It is basically as practical as the golf but with a much more powerful engine underneath. The number of A250s on the road is a result of how successful this formula is today. The bigger brother to this would be the Golf R which comes with more than 300 hp and AWD system which also goes against the A45 which is the bigger brother of the A250.

Who doesn't know how to get a good 0-100 time. All you have to have is a powerful engine and its pedal to the floor. The GT86 is the successor of the infamous AE86 Corolla, the tofu delivery car that goes sideways up and down hill. This car is not built for speed but the perfect 50-50 weight distribution across the chassis, the fun is not in the straight line but the corners. If the power is something that concerns you, good news is that there are plenty of aftermarket turbocharger and supercharger kits to make this faster and who says Toyota is all about reliability and practicality.

Looking for a performance car, a sedan and a family car at the same time? Look no further than the BMW 3-series. The 3 series has been the most successful car in the BMW brand. Since the 70s, the 3 series has always been the benchmark for rivals such as the Merc C-Class, Audi A4, Jaguar XE, Lexus IS. It also comes in a 2 door version which is called the 4-series, more SUV-like is called the 3-series GT while other markets have the 3 series wagon. If you want more power you can consider the M340i or even the M3/M4.
BMW 120i (F20)

How often do you see a RWD family hatchback? It is the last of its kind. The new 1 series is now all in the form of FWD in order to provide more rear leg room and better fuel consumption. Power in this car is not weak but is far from being powerful, but you buy this because of its RWD and sideway action, in a family hatchback!
MINI Cooper S 3-door (F56)

Transmission: 7 speed Dual Clutch Transmission (Wet), older version get 6 speed AT
Power: 192HP, 280 Nm
Drivetrain: FWD
0-100km/h: 6.7 sec
Top Speed: 235km/h
New car price: RM253,319
Price at the time of this article: RM130,000 - Rm218,000
I always thought that MINIs were for ladies who like the appearance of a small, cute hatchback. Until I got my hands behind one of these, I realized I made a huge mistake. It might look small on the outside, but because of it’s boxy silhouette, full size adults can actually feel quite comfortable in the rear seats. Power might not be eye catching on paper, but do keep in mind that this is a light and small car, which means it doesn't need a lot of power to go superfast. Saving the best for the last is the handling, all I can say I never imagined this little car goes through bends like a train on rails. The sensation is really mind boggling and you should really try it if you have the chance. There I said it, try it at your own risk as it is very poisonous.
