The Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren was a grand tourer jointly developed by both Mercedes-Benz and McLaren. The development was done back when Mercedes-Benz had 40 percent share in McLaren.
It was sold between 2003 and 2010 and was offered in coupe, speedster and roadster style. The rarest being the Speedster.
The moniker SLR stands for "Sport Leicht Rennsport" was a homage to the Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupe of the 50s which also serves as an inspiration to the remake you see here today.
Engine and Performance
The SLR McLaren used a 5.4-liter supercharged V8 that produced 617bhp and a staggering 780Nm of torque between 3200 and 5000rpm.
By coupling the V8 with the AMG Speedshift automatic transmission, the SLR McLaren is able to hit 100km/h from standstill in 3.4 seconds. It can then pushed up to a maximum speed of 334km/h (208mph).
Brakes
The SLR McLaren utilised the Sensotronic Brake Control System, which was a type of brake-by-wire system. Additionally, the SLR used carbon ceramic brakes for better stopping performance and fade resistance.
Conclusion
Despite it being monstrous and powerful, reviewers consider it as a grand tourer instead of a full-fledged sportscar. This were mainly due to its front-mid engine configuration, automatic gearbox and its driving characteristics.
Last but not least, I think it is a befitting tribute to the original SLR and it still looks gorgeous by today's standards.
