Owner review: Undefeatable 4D pocket, best bang of buck for biggest space- My 2017 Perodua Alza

Reasons why I bought this car

Our family of four already have a Corolla Altis, as me and my sister are going into college we will need our own car. So we decided to get something that is cheap, reliable and practical for my first car. We go back and forth between Johor and KL so we went with the Perodua Alza as it is spacious.

Car selection process

• I don’t really have a budget in mind because my parents was the decision maker at that time
• We wanted something spacious for long journey rides to travel back and forth between KL and Johor

User experience

I have already done 70,000km in this car and I average 8L/100km.
PerformanceThe Perodua Alza comes with the same 1.5 engine and the same transmission as the myvi. So if I were to tell you that this car drives better than the myvi, it would be a lie. Especially when the car is fully loaded, the car can actually feel very underpowered.

Comfort

But let's be honest with ourselves, you buy a MPV not for its driving dynamics and handling. You buy it because of its space, and this is where it shines. The middle row can fit 3 regular size adults no problem while the back seats are more recommended for adults for short journeys and toddlers will just fit fine back there. Ride comfort is just okay, a tad better than the Myvi in my opinion, but something I would wish for is less body roll around the corners.

Space

Space was also one of the key factors in the purchase decision. 4 family members going back to Johor will definitely require a significant amount of space for luggage and tapao food along the way back and forth from Johor. Back in my uni days, I remember using this car for my shoe reselling business. At one point I was able to fit 100 shoe boxes in the car, which is good so that I can display all my available shoes and don’t have to make many trips to get my stock.

Interior

The front is almost identical with the Myvi. The gear, steering, aircond controls, button and switches are all identical if not closely similar to the Myvi. After all this is the Myvi’s sister car. Cloth upholstery is also expected in this price point. I can’t remember if the higher specced ones get leather upholstery. But at least cloth won't absorb a lot of heat under the hot sun compared to black leather seats. I especially like that the cup holders are placed on the upper part of the door panel for ease of grabbing the drinks.

Exterior

Exterior wise, the front looks similar to the Myvi while the body of the car is extended to accommodate the bigger booth and 2 extra seats. The back of the car is also somewhat similar to the Myvi. In my opinion, the design for this MPV is actually quite nice compared to other MPVs.

Maintenance

I have had this car for 4 years already and I have been driving it on a daily basis and it never gave me any problems which is something I really appreciate. It is very easy to maintain as well, just your regular oil change and replace your wear and tear parts from time to time and this car never failed me.
