2019 Renault Captur Tce Plus, RM116k (before discount)
It looked unique and attractive and had all the features and power I was looking for within a certain price range.
I had a budget of RM135,000
Model(s) that I have considered include: Mazda CX3, Subaru XV, Proton X70
Reasons why I chose this car:
This car had a good balance of ride, handling, power, features, and space. The ride, space, and NVH being exceptionally good at this price point. I preferred my car not to have a CVT or a 4-speed torque converter auto gearbox. This has a 6-speed dual-clutch auto gearbox. Renault also gives a very good 5-year warranty and a comprehensive maintenance package.
User Experience
I have already done 9,000 km
Since the purchase, my thoughts about the car are:
Very good ride and handling balance especially for Malaysia's terrible road conditions.
Very good NVH levels. So the car feels refined.
Good interior space for 4 adults.
Powerful pull from the torquey engine at any speed.
Good trunk space (Super versatile with a false floor and split foldable/adjustable sliding rear seat.
Big car features like auto lights and wipers, cruise control, speed limiter, semi-digital dash, seat belt warning for even the rear passengers, built-in sat-nav with Waze app.
Commanding view over the road via high seating position.
Pros
Good ride and handling balance
Very quiet at all speeds
Good space especially the trunk
Very useful features for day to day livability
Torquey engine
The great-sounding ICE system
The beautiful and well-executed deep red leather interior on the Tce Plus variant.
Hill hold assist is a boon on a dual-clutch gearbox car.
The paintwork quality is glorious. Most colours.
The walkaway auto door locking ability is a boon.
Cons
Occasionally jerky at low speeds especially at 1st start and move off in the morning. Gets better the longer you drive throughout the day.
Cup holders in the centre console should be deeper to avoid tall cups or bottles tipping over.
The seat attached centre console is good but can occasionally hamper access to the handbrake lever.
The seat rake adjuster for the front seats is a pain to access and use.
Looks distinctively pretty and maybe not muscular enough. (Personal opinion)
Lack of an electronic parking brake.
Total Score: 4
Performance: 4
Quality & Features: 4
Space: 4
Ride Comfort: 5
Fuel Economy: 4
Price & Cost: 5
This car has been unexpectedly outstanding and fun to drive and own. Performs way above its value and has proven reliable too. My friends and family love it once they experience a drive in it. The cherry on the cake is that it is economical, looks sporty and distinctive too.
Our 2 dogs which are silky terriers seem to love sniffing the car and occasionally nibble at its front valance and mud flaps. Why they do that remains a mystery.
Secondly, the car's higher than normal ride height allows it to traverse mild floods and rocky ground easily.

Mine is also jerky at low speed, but the eco mode helps reduce jerk a little bit.
