Basic information
2020 Proton X70 Premium
Reason why I bought this car
My daughter was born in 2019, at that time I was driving a Mazda2 hatchback (same with Adrian). As I have more things that need to be fetched, and also more space for my growing family, the Mazda2 really gives me a big headache. Hence I decided to buy a more spacious car.
Car selection process
- I had a budget: RM 150k
- Models that I have considered include: Toyota Corolla, Subaru XV, Toyota Camry Hybrid (Used), 2019 Toyota Camry 2.5V, Mazda CX5
The reason why I choose this car
I am not necessarily into an SUV, personally i still prefer a lower body ride like Sedan or Hatchback. However, I have test drived all the models that I have considered, Proton X70 is by far the most satisfied model for me and my family with a very attractive price tag.
For me, the interior of the car is the most important part for me as we need to sit and drive in the interior. With such a price, I get a more advanced feature and a few levels above the interior. Really have to give a big thumbs up for the interior quality and build. There is almost a soft touch everywhere, you can't really find the cheap plug feel. Seriously,I feel it is much pleasence to the eyes even compared to my father's W212 E class, especially the Nappa leather seat.
User experience
I have already done 8887 km.
I have been driving for a very long time on highway drives. Proton X70 is a wonderful and brillion car on highway drive. Especially it comes with ACC, although it is not as advanced as the one in Proton X50, but still, it gives me a more relaxing cruise on the journey. I can put my feet in a comfortable place and enjoy the fun of riding while listening to music.
Speaking about music, the so-called 'Kenwood' speaker set up does not really deliver the 'Oom'. And also, I'm still not very sure how to use Joox.
On top of that, it doesn't come with Apple car play and Android auto. I mean I can understand that, however, why don't we get a waze app and spotify app instead of the unfamiliar Here map and Joox? The baidu map before was performed far better than this current one. Please do not tell me that Hey dude, it comes with easy connection wey. Nah, you better come and use it and tell me it is useful ya.
As a national brand, it would be better if they understand what Malaysian need!
Space wise, fantastic legroom on the rear seat, never get complained by my family members on that except is a bit hard to get in and out of the car due to the height of the car (My family members all are not that tall).
Ride and handling, don't lie, it is a family SUV, just chill and enjoy the comfort ride, hold the nearly zero feeling steering and just go, don't mention about ride and handling ok? Ride comfort? Best yo!
Don't forget to mention that this car comes with "Hi Proton'' features, well many said that it's just a gimmick, but for me, it is useful. When on the drive, I can just use this function to help me set location, play the music / FM that I want, like a boss.
On top of that, I also found the feature that during heavy rain, when I shift to Reverse, the rear wiper activates automatically to clear the rear window more good visibility, am I buying a Proton? Is this a proton?

Pros & Cons
Pros
- Top nope Interior quality
- Super high res 360 camera
- Spacious interior
- USB port here and there
- Inlumination on every single storage place
- Quite and comfort cabin
- Smooth DCT gearbox
- Hi proton function is useful
Cons
- It looks like there is a lot of storage space, but none of them are big enough, even the glove box and the center console.
- Auto high beam function is useless. It goes high beam even though there is a car in front.
- Wind noise is noticeable since I had the door visor plugged in.
- Too many notification sounds in the cabin, annoying.
Summary
Overall, I am very satisfied with this purchase. A very spacious and comfortable family SUV.
Worth every single cent. It will cost you at least RM40K more to get other brands C-segment SUV (highspec). Unfortunately, fuel consumption is on the thirsty side, but hey, I already saved RM40K at the very first place, what else do you want?
Back then, when you drove a Proton, you would kinda feel I cannot afford for more, have to settle with this.... But now, I buy proton is not because I can't afford more, I buy Proton because I want it. I am so proud to become a Proton owner now.
Some interesting events
When the first day I got the car, 4G connection cannot work, SC said that they will help me to claim a new head unit, I was a bit unhappy when I got my car. However, the head unit comes after 5days, very sufficient.
Also, as many Proton X70 owners out there are facing the same weird sound problem, the rear got ekkk ekkk sound. That's happened to me too. SC helped me to settle after I dropped my car in the service center for 4 days (I was working from home, so I was able to leave my car there for so many days).
On top of that, SC did called me as below:
- First week after I got my car, SC called me asking about how the car was?Any problem?bla bla bla...
- Called me after getting my car 1months, to remind me to go for 1000 KM service.
- Called me 6 months after the first service, remind me to go for 10000 KM the second service.
A simple but warm action. Worth a like!
