Owner Review: A 'racing car' that witnessed my growth, irreplaceable driving pleasure- My Proton Suprima S

Model: Proton Suprima S 1.6 CVT Premium

Year: Year Make 2015

Price: around RM80,000

Reasons why I bought this car

Meets the criteria that I have enlist during the new car hunting. Most of the days, I spent more time in my car rather in the office or home.So I really need something that comfy and also have a good performance also combine with value for money.It must be a C segment car, as I aimed to use it for a long time.

Car selection process

● I had a budget of: RM70k to RM110k

● Models that I have considered include: Mitsubishi Lancer GTE, Kia Cerato 2.0, Peugeot 408 Turbo, Ford Focus Hatchback, Hyundai Elantra 1.8, Mazda 3 

The Hot Hatch has always been my type of car and I have eyed this car since 2013, but back then, my previous car still quite a new car for me. I still remember the day this car was launched, I fall in love in the first sight.

Then I kept driving my Proton Persona Eleagnce M-Line year make 2011 until few incident happened.I had 1 minor accident and 3 times the car spun while tackling a corner (M-Line Persona does not come with ABS and only have 1 Airbag). Upon that, I realised that I need a new vehicle that have the sfatey tech, Perfect combination of my needs, wants and desire. As my previous job required to travel a lot, and I'm also a frequent PLUS user, thus I need a car that can meets all the crietria that I've enlist which is;

- good performance 
- spacious
- exceptional handling
- easy to maintain 
- value for money

And after months of hunting new car, numerous visit of showrooms and test drives, I still unable to make a firm decision on which car should I own it. Then, I turn to a friend who was driving the Proton Preve 1.6 CVT Premium, he even let me drive around the car for a while. I have never felt drving such a pleasure, with enough torque for me (test drive tracks aren't that far, can't really feel the true power and handling).It was that moment I have decieded to get the Suprima S Premium and finally become an owner on the 16th October 2015.

User experience

●I have already done 218220 km.

●Since the purchase, my thoughts about the car are

Driving a rare hot hatch really do gives me more affection towards this car.  I’ve also quite often been ask “what Proton is this?” and also once, I’m about to fill in the petrol and cashier straight away telling me that RON95 is limited for Malaysian Car, left me no choice but to flip my IC as he thought it was Singaporean car, as usually the not usually seen car belongs to the Singaporean.

This car is truly fits my decision. It has the power that I need, the space, the comfort and fully loaded with safety tech. As someone who always travel here and there, which also once a month went back tp PJ (as I am staying and working in JB). 

Having a CVT with Tiptronics and Paddle Shift really does making my driving experience more fun. I know, how can a CVT be fun? It’s not the CVT part, it’s the Tiptronic part. Whenever I need some “real deal” shifting, just switch the gear lever and walla! U got the almost manual-feel like. It’s like having two types of gearbox in one car.

Using the paddle shift really does help getting extra grip at the corners, even during the rain. When I’m in the cruising mood, the CVT is good enough, gives the best fuel consumption versus the mileage it can go. Yes, to some, this car considered quite a heavy drinker, but hey, if you know the steps, it too can go beyond the expected. 

I did fitted my car with VW MK6 exhaust to give a “sound” to the car since the stock exhaust was too silent . It provides the sound that I intend to have, without spending too much. With some tweaks, it also can give the famous “DSG farts” when using the paddle shift. That is just another bonus of fitting the MK6 exhaust.

After owning the car almost 6 years, from a bachelor to a father, this car still serves me well, it deliver the purpose of buying this car. Even after beyond 200k mileage, I still couldn’t get enough of driving it. When entering the highway, I usually sticks on the right lane, and never give me a problem to keep up with those continental chaps. I love how the car handles the straight line at high speed, the minimum body roll during corner (all my suspensions are factory stock). The Auto headlights and Auto wiper sensors really helpful. The ESC also few times have save me from unwanted incident due to other negligence.

So many nostalgic memories with my beloved ride. I have never regret of buying this car, as until today, I’ve been through a lot of memories with being inside of the car. Happy, sad, crying, frustrated, joy, u named it. I even sometimes drove the car just to clear out my heads. 

Maintenance the car is something I like to compare with other brand. Even though there are times that I felt like quite pricey, but comparing to other C segment, the cost was actually more to average out on C segment. It was not cheap but hey, to have some excitement, there is a cost need to pay.

• Superb handling for a car price under RM100k

• Adequte power for daily use and when in need 

• Fully loaded with safety tech

• The legendary Proton Aircond of course

• Tiptronics and Paddle Shifter

• Love the DRL

• Sleek design

Cons

• The CVT I guess, It would be good if comes with DCT or even 6 Speed AT

• The fuel consumtion when driving in town

• The headunit. Suprima S user will undestand what I mean

• No release button at the rear bonnet. only via the button at the driver side or using remote

• The tailamp. Could be design a better one.

Summary

Some of my friends ever ask, have you ever thought of buying a new ride? My answer is simple. Till today, I have not found a car that truly can replace my Suprima S yet. It might be replaced, but not at the moment. 6 years and still counting. I gain a lot of network through ownin g this car, as I am actively gathered with other Suprima S owner. Sadly this pandemic have restricten our gathering events.
