2008 Honda Civic FD2, bought in 2012
Well, it all started back in 2006 when the Civic FD was launched in Malaysia, at that time I knew I had to own one someday. Once I graduated and got a job I knew I had to work hard and save as much as I could before committing to one. By that time Civic FD was no longer on sale. The Civic FB did not put a smile on my face and therefore I had to consider used units which were quite rare in 2012 in the used car market considering I only wanted the 2.0 version.
I had a budget of RM130,000
Model(s) that I have considered include: None, only wanted the Civic FD
Reasons why I chose this car:
A powerful engine even in stock form
Great looks and futuristic dashboard with digital meter box
Lots of aftermarket parts
Paddle Shifters
I have already done 151,000 km
Since the purchase, my thoughts about the car are:
Knowing that it had minor steering rack issues at the time of my purchase I still proceeded and rectified the problem by replacing a recon unit shortly after. The car was still worth every dime as it was in such good condition with low mileage. Interior is still brand new till today as I usually travel alone. Maintenance wise it has pretty fair to me with the usual lubrication changes and wears and tear here and there. The worst experience was the radiator fan died in the middle of an 8-hour crawl from Kuala Lumpur up north, but luckily with I had unlimited distance towing services from my insurance company.
Pros
Spot on seating position and visibility
Great throttle response
Powerful free-revving NA engine
Handles well
Comfy front and rear seats
Good fuel economy on long-distance drives
Still looks sporty even in 2020
Cons
Rear-wheel bearings wear out quite often
Not so good fuel economy in town
Top right engine mounting is very fragile(replaced it with fd2r mounting does the job)
Not so good NVH
Total Score: 4
Performance: 5
Quality & Features: 4
Space: 5
Ride Comfort: 3
Fuel Economy: 3
Price & Cost: 5
One of the best decisions of my life was purchasing this car as it is how I imagined it since the first time I laid my eyes on it, with no regrets. No plans on selling it as I will pass it down to my children in the future. Traveling long distance doesn't matter if it's for tea on Sunday evenings in Cameron highlands, weekend convoys with the boys or a trip to the Pasar it feels like a breeze, even in traffic jams its a great place to be, no falling asleep at the wheel or feeling lethargic. The car keeps me awake and entertained at all times.
