Basic information about my car:
2021 Toyota Harrier
Reasons why I bought this car(purpose):
Never owned an SUV before & coupled with the frequent flash flood in my area & poor road condition, I guess a car with higher ground clearance would serve me well.
Car Selection Process
- Monthly repayment sum of less than RM2,500.00 over a 96 months tenure on any car would do.
- Models that I have considered include BMW 320i & Lexux NX 300。
Having a sedan throughout my driving years, I wanted a change to cope with the environment am in like frequent flash flood. In the midst of searchig I found both Lexus & Harrier shared the same TNGA platform but the latter carry a lower price tag. After sitting (not driving since at time of viewing the Harrier in Toyota showroom, no test drive was available) in both of them, I personally found that the Harrier is not far from the Lexus. The techhical specs were also relatively close. Hence I opted for a Harrier at a much lower price tag.
User Experience
- I have already done 3,000 km.
- My average fuel consumption is 17 km/L.
On first look, only a word ~ Handsome! Drive-wise, TNGA platform is seriously driver centric. Listed power is very sufficient for city driving & cruising at 120 KM/h along the NSE, power is not an issue. The Toyota Safety Sense is remarkable especially the DRCC. The car is on semi auto pilot when the cruise control is turned on. Body roll is acceptable for a car of this height. Suspension is inclined to the softer side but undoubtedly comfortable. One small nigger is the noise from the A post when cruising above 120 KM/h is a bit distracting. Like my Altis, the CVT transmission does emanate the noise of a vacuum cleaner but due to good sound insulation, it is overall acceptable. The panoramic moon roof is simply gorgeous!
In sport mode, 0-100 is 9 seconds.
The double wishbone suspension comes into play when negotiating bent. I tried this out on my way to Genting & the very serpentine route in Teluk Bahang in Penang.
Pros and Cons
Pros of my car
- Good fuel consumption. I can get at any point a 12 KM / L mileage.
- Comfortable drive despite the softer suspension.
- Sitting cabin is spacious, there should not be any issue to sit 5 adults.
- The Nano e filter is effective - since the day I got the car till now, I have placed food in the cabin & dined in it as well but never has it for once retain any food after smell.
- It's luxurious within yet low profile (unlike a BMW, Audi or Mercedes that shout for attention) without. This suits my personality well.
Cons
- There is actually no con.
- Seeing the TNGA is built flatter, ingress & egress are a bit of a hassle despite my 167 CM height. I have to crouch slightly for this purpose.
- Close to RM250,000.00, a better in-car sound system would be very much desired.

Summary:
I like the 2021 Harrier & Toyota, known for their reliability; it should last for many more enjoyable driving years for me. In fact it is my daily use car to work & leisure.
